Se utiliza para tratar los síntomas de la enfermedad de reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE) y otras enfermedades relacionadas con un exceso de ácido estomacal como el síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison. También se utiliza para ayudar a sanar la esofagitis erosiva (el ácido estomacal daña su esófago). También puede recetarse para prevenir la úlcera gástrica causada por una infección de Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) o por el uso de medicamentos antiinflamatorios no esteroides (AINES).
